Curator's note

Lola Dupre's work begins with the transformation of existing images. Through hundreds of carefully selected fragments, she reconstructs photographs and illustrations until they become something new, often moving between representation and abstraction.

Her process is precise and highly attentive to colour. Dupré works by identifying tonal relationships between different areas of an image and finding paper fragments that can reproduce them. The result is a form of collage where the individual pieces stay visible as parts of the construction while still contributing to a larger, continuous image.

For Day Spectres & Invisible Interruptions, Dupré presents three works that bring together personal memory, imagined spaces, and the experience of moving through the world. A Prison of My Own Design emerged from thinking about how a small mistake can spiral into an impossible situation, while Farewell Kilkerran reflects on leaving Scotland and the memories tied to a place. The Intrepid considers movement, fragility, and the temporary structures we move through in life.

Dupré has described collage as an unusually accessible medium, since it allows almost any existing image to become part of a new combination. Her work takes that possibility seriously, using fragments not just to construct pictures, but to reconsider what an image can hold.

"This work comes from a dream I think born from paranoid thoughts about the spiraling effects of one small mistake and the impossible situations we then find ourselves in. A huge mistake is born from one small footstep in the wrong direction. But to remain paralysed by fear means we never grow, regret is something that comes from what we do not do, not from what we do." L.D.

"Ultimately the medium should not matter I think... what matters is human imagination and creativity. The means of production, the studio, the money, it cannot make anything great. I think collage kind of gives you access to everything, in a way it might be the ultimate technique, to mix images, sounds.. to create, to reflect the world and project a new perspective. I could be wrong but I think as long as I can move my hands I will be making paper collage. "

"A strong autobiographical piece. We previously lived in Kilkerran, South Ayrshire. This building in the collage does not resemble where we lived in a literal sense but in an abstract way. We left Scotland, and moved to Spain where I have family. I think this piece was the last one I made in Scotland, and each window captures a moment not geographically distant." L.D.

The Intrepid

"A hopeful and optimistic work exploring how we move from one place to another. The great and fragile lives that we create are held together by ideas and opinions. Like great ships we move through our lives, beautiful and majestic. But ultimately we are torn to pieces on rocks or destroyed by a rust which can never be held back. Until then we sail through the world like glorious short lived stars." L.D.

"Collage still remains very contemporary because of the shock and quickness of juxtaposition, of very odd things thrown together. And what does that mean?
It means danger!"
